How Much Does it Cost to Get Divorced?

Many clients ask this question and unfortunately there is no definite answer.  One client may spend a few thousand dollars and another client, with essentially the same facts and issues, may spend a hundred thousand dollars.  What accounts for the wide variance in costs and fees?

By far, the factor that most influences the cost of divorce, is the personality and mental state of the client and his/her spouse.  A person who can prioritize interests and not sweat the small stuff is going to spend less money to get divorced than the opposite-type person. In addition, if there are issues of addiction or mental illness, it is likely it will cost more to complete the divorce.

Other factors which influence the financial cost of a divorce include:  existence or non-existence of complicated facts and legal issues; ongoing family violence; the schedules of lawyers, clients and the courthouse; the "reasonableness" of the lawyers and clients; whether an individual resides outside of Texas or the country; the competence and skill of the opposing lawyer; and the level of support a client needs from the lawyer and staff.

I will save a discussion about the emotional costs of divorce for a later time.......
